YOSHUA OKÓN – Egagrópilas at the 61st International Art Exhibition

We are pleased to share views of Yoshua Okón’s Egagrópilas (2026), presented as part of Chimera at The 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Drawing inspiration from The Birds, the visionary 1963 film by Alfred Hitchcock, 𝘌𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘰́𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘴 imagines a reversal of power in which vultures invade a neighborhood convenience store—an emblematic space of neoliberal consumer culture. Through a single-channel video with sound, the work evokes an avian counterattack against humanity, echoing growing ecological crises and the devastating consequences of human activity on the natural world. Commonly associated with death, the vultures become agents of reckoning, confronting viewers with the environmental and social costs embedded in contemporary systems of consumption. Through this powerful allegory, Okón invites reflection on collapse, renewal, and the fragile relationship between humans and the ecosystems they inhabit.
