MALO CHAPUY & SACHA CAMBIER DE MONTRAVEL – Gothiques

We are thrilled to share that Sacha Cambier de Montravel and Malo Chapuy are apart of the exhibition “Gothiques”, running from September 24 to January 26, 2026 at the Louvre Lens.
From the birth of cathedrals in the Middle Ages to today’s Gothic counterculture and fantasy, Gothic art has traveled through the centuries in unprecedented ways. For the first time, the Louvre-Lens is dedicating a panorama to Gothic art from the 12th to the 21st century, tracing its origins through the rise of Neo-Gothic in the 19th century and contemporary Gothic culture.

Gothic art resonates with the age of the great cathedral builders. This movement, one of the first to spread across all of Europe, inspired extraordinary artistic forms. Sculptures, objets d’art, paintings, manuscripts, stained glass, photographs, and drawings are brought together in a presentation of more than 250 works. They reveal both the transformations and continuities of Gothic languages that flourished in the medieval period, re-emerged powerfully in the 18th and 19th centuries with the Neo-Gothic, and continue to inspire us today. But where does the word “Gothic” itself come from? Why has this art of light and color come to be associated with a subversive aesthetic marked by darkness and fantasy? How can we explain this endlessly renewed fascination? The exhibition offers a journey through time, punctuated by thematic incursions into writing, music, cinema, and literature. It invites visitors to discover, across the centuries, the Gothic visual language, shaped by humanism, technical mastery, and the presence of the fantastical. This immersion into history and imagination, in search of the many faces of the Gothic, reveals an artistic movement at once unique and multifaceted, historical and alive.
