"One of the most important aspects of my work is the attempt to make images, documents, archives, and other materials convey meanings beyond what they show; to read between the lines of official narratives, to reveal their flip side, and to create tension between them and other narratives and perspectives."
1. BIOGRAPHY
Fredi Casco’s artistic practice revolves around archival documents and photographs that he finds in flea markets and old book stores. He creates alternative narratives that mix contemporary history, literature and a sense of uncanniness or nostalgia. He has taken great interest in the official portraits from the oligarchy in South America, as well as the indigenous Chaco region of Paraguay or his own family photographs. A visual artist, writer and director, Fredi Casco is also editor of the South American magazine Sueño de la Razón. He co-founded El Ojo Salvaje (Month of Photography in Paraguay) and also of the independent publishing house Ediciones de la Ura in Asunción. His work has been shown at the 16th Bienal de Cuenca (2023); the 55th Venice Biennale, Latin American Pavilion (2013); 3rd and 10th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2001 and 2015); Valencia Biennial, Spain (2007); Thessaloniki Biennial of Contemporary Art, Greece (2009); 10th Habana Biennial (2009); BienalSur, Buenos Aires (2019 and 2021). "I’ve always been fascinated by the iconography of horror and science fiction films, but also by the visuals of popular literature, the textures, the “tactile visuality” of offset prints… Since I’m a fan of these kinds of products, I’ve also always been interested in stories related to extraterrestrial encounters and pseudoscientific theories with their bombastic, sensationalist headlines."
